Sonar is an invaluable device, especially while ice fishing. It permits detecting the presence of fish in the vicinity, establishing the depth where they are and determining whether they show any interest in our lure, all without wasting time. If you see Chubby Darter has attracted fish and despite that they do not bite or their bites are light, you can use one of tricks developed by professional US ice anglers. The simplest one is to add natural bait (like earthworm or small dead fish) on the lower or rear treble hook. You can also replace a treble hook with a single one. The final solution that fails seldom is to attach a short leader to one of the lures ears. The leader should have a length between 3 and 5 cm and the hook attached to the leader should be a size of No 8 – 2 (depending on the size of the bait used) or with a small jighead on a similar hook. While using this method you should remember that all maneuvres with this system should be calm and gentle. Lowering the lure should be done especially carefully to avoid leader and the main line tangles. Bites might happen both during rising and lowering the lure.
